KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Wayne State baseball team (10-10) suffered its third loss in the last two days, an 11-1 result at Western Michigan (13-7-1) on Wednesday afternoon at Hyames Field.
Wayne State managed just three hits, two of which came courtesy of Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) who extended his hitting streak to nine games. Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) stole two bases and scored WSU's only run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Ranck.
Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) reached safely twice with a single and a walk, and also notched his fifth stolen base.
Western Michigan took a 2-1 lead in the second but exploded for nine runs over the final four innings, including consecutive three-run frames in the fifth and sixth and another in the eighth.
Matthew Abro went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Broncos, while Chris Lewis had two hits and drove in three.
Six pitchers saw action on the mound for Wayne State. David White (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) went three innings in his first start of the year (0-1), giving up just two runs on two hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts.
The Warriors open their home schedule with a four-game series this weekend against Hillsdale. Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m., and Sunday's twinbill will start at noon.
