DETROIT - Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) collected a career-high four hits as the Wayne State baseball team (16-10) defeated Tiffin (10-13), 5-1, in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader at Heminger Field.
Scott Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) went 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Drew Churchward (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) combined for three hits and four RBI.
The Warriors took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI groundout by John Skaggs (Adrian, Mich.) and RBI singles by LaPensee and Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine). They scored two more in the fifth on a two-run double by Martin.
Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.) surrendered just two hits in four scoreless innings for his first career victory. Brady Cooper (Allen Park, Mich.) worked two scoreless innings, and John Kessick (Niles, Mich.) finished off the Dragons in the seventh.
Wayne State travels to Findlay this weekend for a four-game set beginning Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
NOTES
Wayne State is 4-10 in non-conference games ... LaPensee extended his hitting streak to nine games ... he has improved his season average from .250 to .367 in that span ... WSU is 8-4 all-time against Tiffin.
