DETROIT - The Wayne State baseball team (22-12, 17-2 GLIAC) dropped a 7-2 decision to 10th-ranked Grand Valley State (26-9, 12-5 GLIAC) in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. It marked WSU's first loss at home this season and just its second loss in conference play.
GVSU starter Andre Benjamin (7-0) surrendered just five hits over seven innings, two of which came off the bat of Drew Churchward (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), who also drove in a run as did Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.).
Four of the six runs allowed by WSU starter Dane Little (Windsor, Ont./F.J. Brennan Catholic) were unearned due to two Warrior errors. Little (3-3) gave up 10 hits over five innings before giving way to Brett Shankin (Washington, Mich./Romeo), who allowed just one run in the last two frames.
The Lakers took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth innings before an RBI single by Churchward plated Matt Cunningham (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea), who drew a one-out walk.
An RBI single by Witczak in the sixth, bringing in Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland), accounted for WSU's other run in the sixth.
NOTES
All 15 of GVSU's hits were singles ... Cunningham's leadoff triple in the third inning was the only extra-base hit for either team ... Wayne State had previously won 13 home games in a row dating back to last season ... the Warriors' last home loss was April 24, 2007 against Tiffin ... Shankin made his first appearance since April 2 at Western Michigan.
