DETROIT - The 27th-ranked Wayne State University baseball team (24-12) earned a 7-2 victory over Tiffin University (17-19) in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman Brett Shankin (Washington, Mich./Romeo) went five innings in his first collegiate start, surrendering just one run on three hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, but Shankin held the visitors scoreless over the next four.
An RBI single by Adam Kaminski (Clinton Twp., Mich./Mt. Clemens) in the bottom of the first tied things up, while back-to-back two-run frames gave the Warriors a 5-1 advantage. Consecutive RBI singles by Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Matt Cunningham (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea) in the third, followed by a base hit by Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) and a double by Kaminski which each drove in a run, put the home team ahead by four.
Drew Churchward's (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) sacrifice fly in the fifth and a double steal by Witczak and Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) in the sixth accounted for the final two WSU runs.
Robby Foscarin (Toronto, Ont./Michael Power St. Joseph) pitched a scoreless sixth inning, and David White (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) notched the final three outs in the seventh to preserve the win.
NOTES
Wayne State had four stolen bases in the game, including two by Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) ... Tim George (Quincy, Mich.) was 1-for-3 in his first start at first base since April 9 at Tiffin ... Foscarin has allowed just one run in his last five appearances.
