DETROIT - Wayne State University junior shortstop Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) was named Player of the Week by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the first time in his career.

Williams hit .600 (12-20) with a slugging percentage of .800 and a .667 on-base mark as WSU went 6-0 last week and clinched a berth in the GLIAC Tournament. He scored 13 of WSU's 80 runs (16.3 percent) and stole seven bases, increasing his GLIAC-leading total to 27 swipes.

Williams, who is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak, ranks fifth in the GLIAC in runs (42), first in triples (4), and fourth in walks (26).

After two wins over Tiffin last Wednesday and four against Northwood over the weekend, Wayne State moved up nine positions to 18th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll. The Warriors, who are in first place in the GLIAC with six conference games remaining, head to Saginaw Valley State this Wednesday for a doubleheader before closing the regular season this weekend against Ashland.
