Men's Fencing Drops All Five Duals At NYU Invitational

New York, N.Y. - The Wayne State University men's fencing squad resumed the duals portion of its 2007-08 schedule on Saturday at the New York University Invitational. WSU lost all five dual matches.

The Warriors suffered setbacks to St. John's (21-5), NYU (22-5), Yale (20-7), Columbia (22-5) and Stevens Tech (17-10).

Freshman Jakub Gibczynski (Lodz, Poland) compiled a 12-3 record in the men's sabre. Also competing in the sabre were redshirt freshman Andrew Opalewski (Macomb, Mich./Utica Eisenhower) and sophomore Patrick Tomlinson (Marysville, Mich.). Both Opalewski and Tomlinson had records of 2-13.

WSU had only two competitors in the epee -- Joe Fresard and sophomore Slava Zingerman (Ashkelon, Israel). Zingerman compiled an 11-3 mark, with Fresard winning two of 14 bouts.

In foil competition, sophomore Michal Brichacek (Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph's) had a 1-14 mark, while freshman Peter Franko (Dearborn, Mich.) was 0-15. With just two competitors, WSU had to forfeit three foil bouts per opponent.

The Warriors will be competing in the Northwestern University Duals on Saturday, Feb. 2 and Sunday, Feb. 3 in Evanston, Ill.
