BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Wayne State men's hockey team (8-18-2, 4-8-0 CHA) had its three-game winning streak snapped after dropping a 4-3 decision in overtime at Bemidji State (13-12-3, 10-3-3 CHA) on Saturday night at John Glas Fieldhouse.
Matt Read scored the game-winner for the Beavers 2:57 into the extra frame, capping off a comeback which resulted in just the second loss in the Warriors' last 16 games to reach overtime.
After a scoreless first period, Baine Jarvis game BSU a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 7:27 of the middle stanza.
Freshmen Chris Kushneriuk (Ottawa, Ont./Orleans Blues) and Jordan Inglis (108 Mile Ranch, B.C./Prince George Spruce Kings) scored 59 seconds apart midway through the second period to put the Warriors ahead by one. Inglis netted his second straight tally at 1:55 in the third to make it a 3-1 game.
Power-play goals from Blaine Jarvis and Tyler Scofield, however, tied the score at three apiece before Read's game-winning goal in overtime.
Shots on goal favored BSU, 35-21, including a 14-3 advantage in the third period. WSU goaltender Brett Bothwell (Red Deer, Alb./Yorkton Terriers) totaled 31 saves, while counterpart Matt Climie registered 18 for the Beavers.
Wayne State hosts Robert Morris next weekend, Feb.8-9, at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
