BEMIDJI, Minn. - In a back-and-forth affair Friday night at the Glas Fieldhouse, the Wayne State men's hockey team (9-22-2, 5-12-0 CHA) came out on the short end of a 7-5 result against league foe Bemidji State (15-15-3, 12-4-3 CHA).
The 12 goals between the two teams marked Wayne State's highest-scoring game since another 7-5 setback at BSU on Jan. 6 last season.
Five Warriors had multiple-point outputs Friday, including Stavros Paskaris (Dearborn, Mich./Kewadin Indians) who scored twice and added an assist. Derek Punches (Manchester, Mich./Texas Tornado) and Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich./Texas Tornado) tallied a goal and an assist apiece, while Derek Bachynski (Belle River, Ont./Leamington Flyers) and Jeff Caister (Mississauga, Ont./Milton Icehawks) each chipped in a pair of helpers.
The Beavers jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes until Paskaris cut the Warriors' deficit in half at 17:35 with his 12th of the season.
Ryan Cramer's goal at 1:21 of the second put BSU ahead by two again, but Paskaris answered at 9:11 with the first of three WSU second-period goals. Krug and Jared Katz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Baystate Breakers) also lit the lamp in the middle stanza, as the Warriors held a slim 4-3 lead through the first 40 minutes.
After Blaine Jarvis tied the game at four with a power-play goal at 6:12 in the third, WSU regained the lead as Punches netted a power-play tally of his own at 8:55.
Matt Francis knotted the score again at 11:37 before Riley Weselowski's game-winner at 13:19. Matt Pope added an empty-netter with seven seconds remaining.
Freshman goaltender Mike Devoney (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Bridgewater Bandits) made 24 saves in his first start since Jan. 19 against Niagara. Matt Climie totaled 10 saves in 30 minutes before being pulled in favor of Orlando Alamano, who stopped 12 of 14 shots for the victory.
Wayne State and Bemidji State will meet again at the Glas Fieldhouse on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. CT.
