CHICAGO - The Wayne State men's tennis team kicked of the spring portion of the season with a 7-0 non-conference setback to Division I opponent Illinois-Chicago at the Hinsdale Racquet club Saturday night.

WSU found itself down early as UIC took two of three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. The lone bright sport came as the No. 2 doubles tandem of sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) and senior Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Instituto Moderno Comitan) defeated UIC's Sean Kreymborg and Danny Wilson.

In singles play, the Warriors put forth a valiant effort, especially at the No. 1, and No. 2 singles positions, but the Flames won all six matches to preserve the shutout victory. Marenuad took the first set off 7-6 Sebastian Lystad at the No.1 spot but could not hold on and dropped the final two sets 7-6 (10-8) and 10-6. At No. 2 singles, freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) also lost a tough match to Bastian Harbo, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).

The Warriors continue non-conference play in the Windy City with a 4 p.m. dual match against Chicago State on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3.
