CHICAGO - The Wayne State men's tennis team continued its Windy City road trip with a 5-2 non-conference setback to Division I opponent Chicago State at the Evergreen Racquet club Sunday afternoon.
For the second straight match, WSU (0-2) fell behind losing all three doubles matches. The No. 1 tandem of freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) and senior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) were edged 9-7 by Prabowo Imanuel and Abram Mamahit. Sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) and senior Alejandro Gomez Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Instituto Moderno Comitan) fell 8-6 to Jonathan Sutjaid and Cameron Shanklin at the No. 2 position. CSU's Prakaso Imanuel and Aumir Ahmad completed the sweep at the No. 3 spot downing sophomore Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren DeLaSalle) and freshman Eric Szyzlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton), 8-5.
The Warriors made a push during singles play getting wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions as Gomez won a tough three-set match over Prabowo Imanuel, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 while Mitchell downed Toni Todoric 6-3, 6-2. However, Maubacq fell, 6-4, 7-5, to Prakaso Imanuel at the No. 1 slot while Marenaud lost in a hard fought three-set match to Sutjaidi, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at the No. 2 position. CSU then sealed the match with straight-set wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots to earn the 5-2 victory.
WSU will get a weekend off before hitting the road for a non-conference dual match against the University of Indianapolis on Friday, Feb. 15 at 5:00 p.m.
