Indianapolis, Ind. - The Wayne State men's tennis team recorded its first win of the season downing Indianapolis 7-2 in a non-conference match at the UIndy Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
WSU (1-3) began the match taking 2-of-3 doubles matches. The No. 1 tandem of freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) and senior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) were downed 8-3 by Jan Stastny Jan and J.D. Greenlee. However, Sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) and senior Alejandro Gomez Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Instituto Moderno Comitan) shut out Mark Prazeres-Silva and Werner Henning, 8-0, at the No. 2 position while sophomore Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren DeLaSalle) and freshman Eric Szyzlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) won by default at the No. 3 position.
The Warriors took control of the match during singles play taking 5-of-6 matches. Marenaud defeated Greenlee, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 2 position while Mitchell downed Henning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3. At the No. 4 and No. 5 slots, Gomez beat Prazeres, 6-1 and 6-3 with Turnbull holding off Kyle Prow in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 10-5. Szyzlowski won by default at the No. 6 spot.
WSU will play Bellarmine in a non-conference match on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1:00 p.m at the UIndy Tennis Center.
