West Bloomfield, Mich. - The Wayne State men's tennis team's remained undefeated in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with an 8-1 win over Lake Superior State at The Sports Club of West Bloomfield Saturday afternoon.
In doubles completion, WSU (5-3, 3-0 GLIAC) swept all three matches from Lake Superior (5-8, 0-2 GLIAC). The No. 1 tandem of freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) and senior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) downed Pawel Wegrzyn and Brandon Clayton, 8-4. Sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) and senior Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Instituto Moderno Comitan) took out Craig Baas and Robert Nelson, 8-3, at the No. 2 position while the No. 3 freshman squad of Eric Szyzlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) and Felipe Fronseca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Hope) defeated Travis Toth and Jack Miller, 8-4.
The Warriors took 5-of-6 six matches in straight sets during single play to close out the win. Maubacq defeated Wegrzyn, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 1 position while Marenaud upended Clayton 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Mitchell rolled past Nelson, 6-1, 6-2, at No.3 while Gomez defeated Baas, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 4 slot. Szyzlowski also beat Travis Toth, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5.
WSU hits the road for a non-conference dual match against Division I opponent Toledo on Saturday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m.
