Gross Pointe, Mich. - The Wayne State men's tennis team's remained undefeated in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with a 6-3 win over Mercyhurst College at the Gross Points Hunt Club Saturday afternoon.
Wane State took 2-of-3 three doubles matches from Mercyhurst (5-6, 1-3 GLIAC) as the No. 1 tandem of freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) and senior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) downed Tim Hansson and Mateusz Przybysz, 8-5, while sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) and senior Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Instituto Moderno Comitan) held off Mijo Cotic and Adam Marnik, 8-5, at the No. 2 position.
During singles play, Mitchell moved his winning streak to a team-high eight matches with a 7-5, 6-3, win over Cotic at the No. 3 position. Marenaud downed Przybysz, 6-1, 6-2, while Gomez took out Marnik, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots respectively moving their win streaks to seven matches. Freshman Eric Szyzlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) also defeated Kyle King in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 6 slot to close out the win.
WSU hits the road for a non-conference dual match against Division I opponent Toledo later tonight at 7:30 p.m.
