Midland, Mich. - The #4 Wayne State men's tennis team advanced in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament with a 5-1 win over #5 Mercyhurst College at the Midland Tennis Center Saturday morning. The Warriors will play #1 Northwood in the semifinals later this afternoon
Wane State (8-8) took 2-of-3 three doubles matches from Mercyhurst (6-9) as the No. 1 tandem of freshman Johan Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) and senior Donavon Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) downed Tim Hansson and Mateusz Przybysz, 8-4, while sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France/Camille Jullian) and senior Alejandro Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Instituto Moderno Comitan) upended Mijo Cotic and Adam Marnik, 8-2, at the No. 2 position. The Warriors came close to completing the sweep but the No. 3 squad of sophomore Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren DeLaSalle) freshman Felipe Fonseca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Hope) came up shot against Kyle King and Ronald Heurich, 8-6.
