ERIE, Pa. - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (17-6-3, 5-0-1 CHA) skated to a 2-2- tie on the road at #7/6 Mercyhurst (19-5-3, 4-1-1 CHA) Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Despite snapping WSU's school record winning streak at nine games, the team remains unbeaten over its last 11 contests.
While a two-goal lead quickly evaporated in the third period for the Warriors, they came away with three points in a weekend series highlighted by Friday night's 5-4 overtime triumph which snapped a 33-game winless streak against the Lakers.
Juniors Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) and Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) lit the lamp for the Warriors, while junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) notched an assist. DiPietro also extended her individual point streak to 12 games, matching the school record set by Poyton earlier this season.
Senior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) totaled 26 saves to extend her unbeaten streak to 11 starts.
The first period was a scoreless defensive struggle as both goalies stood tall in net. Mercyhurst had the best scoring opportunity with 44 seconds remaining as the puck got past Turcotte in traffic in front of the net but the referee disallowed the goal ruling that the net came of the hinges before the puck crossed the line.
The second period continued to be a defensive struggle until the final two minutes of play. Mercyhurst went on the power-play at the 18:09 mark but Natalie Payne coughed up the puck just to the right side the Lakers' net. DiPietro took the puck and went in alone on Hosier who tried to poke check the puck away to no avail and was beaten with a back hand shot to give WSU a 1-0 lead at the 18:54 mark.
The Warriors wasted little time to take a 2-0 lead in the third period. Just 21 seconds into the frame, Poyton got a centering pass from Boal and beat Hoiser. Mercyhurst got on the board at the 5:38 mark as Prough beat Turcotte on a feed from Scanzano to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
Stephanie Jones netted the game-tying goal from Meghan Agosta at 11:51, and neither team could gain the advantage through the final 13 minutes of play.
Wayne State returns home for a two-game conference series against Robert Morris (Feb.15-16) at the City Sports Center.
