Decatur, Ala. - The 20th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (0-1 overall) began its 2008 campaign with a 5-3 setback to Southern Indiana on the first day of the Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout. Friday's scheduled games were cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Warriors had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before tying the game at three in the bottom of the fourth but the Screaming Eagles added single tallies in the fifth and sixth to the claim the win.

In the bottom of the first Jaci Banton had a one-out single to left then stole second. After an infield single by Sarah Berry, Robyn Haig walked to load the bases. Amanda Van't Wout earned an RBI by drawing a two-out walk.

After USI tied it in the top of the second, WSU answered in the bottom of the frame. Stephanie LeClair advanced all the way to second on a USI throwing error. After a walk to Laura Guzman and two batters being retired, LeClair scored when Berry reached on an error.

Southern Indiana scored twice in the top of the fourth for a 3-2 lead but LeClair started a Warrior rally with a leadoff single. After a sac bunt by Guzman and a groundout, Banton walked and moved runners moved up on a wild pitch with LeClair scoring the equalizer.

USI tallied the go-ahead run in the fifth on a leadoff home run by Brittany DeWeese off WSU starter Nicole Abel. Lauren Warkentien went into the circle for the Warriors in the sixth and surrendered a two-out home run to Kristin Eickholt.

LeClair had two of WSU's four hits, with Banton and Berry both recording a hit and a walk.

Abel allowed four runs, three earned in five innings with one strikeout. Warkentien pitched two innings with two strikeouts.
