Decatur, Ala. - The Wayne State University softball team (1-2 overall), ranked 20th in the nation, had an early 1-0 lead but allowed five consecutive runs to the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers (1-2) Sunday morning in the Charger Chillout in Decatur, Ala.
Senior Lindsey Perry led off the top of the first with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Jaci Banton. After a strikeout, freshman Rachel Spaccarotelli had an infield single moving Perry to third. She scored when Robyn Haig reached on a throwing error.
KWC answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame on a triple, a double, a fielder's choice, a single, a hit by pitch and two-run double by Olivia Randolph chasing Warrior starter Lauren Warkentien. Nicole Abel retired two of the next three Panther batters without allowing a run.
WSU had one hit the next three innings until the fifth when Laura Guzman and Perry had back-to-back one-out singles, but the next two Warriors were retired.
Kentucky Wesleyan increased its lead with a solo home run in the fourth by Katy Lee.
In the top of the seventh, Guzman walked with two outs and Perry singled. Banton following with a single loading the bases. Sarah Berry's deep drive to right field was caught ending the game.
Perry went three-for-three and also reached on a walk.
Abel allowed just one run in 5.2 innings with three strikeouts.
