Edwardsville, Ill. - The Wayne State University softball team (2-3 overall) opened play at the SIUE Cougar Classic with a 5-0 setback to the host Cougars (7-2).
Both teams had five hits in the contest but seven SIUE batters walked to one for the Warriors.
The Cougars scored once in the bottom of the second and added four insurance runs in the fifth.
In the second, Nicole Abel retired the first batter but walked the next four scoring the game's first run.
In the fifth, SIUE's Courtney Mall walked and Lauren Zembruski singled. Two outs were sandwiched around another walk before Nicole Beecher had a two-run single. Lindsay Longfellow's single scored the fourth run of the game, while Beecher scored on a rundown.
Abel started in the circle for WSU and allowed all five runs in five innings with one strikeout and seven walks. Lauren Warkentien pitched the sixth striking out one batter.
Kaitlin Colosimo struck out 10 Warrior hitters.
Amanda Van't Wout had two hits to lead WSU, who stranded five runners.
Wayne State's best scoring chances were in the first two innings with a runner at third and two outs but were unable to get a key hit. Then in the sixth, Lindsey Perry walked and Van't Wout singled but the next three batters were retired.
