Kissimmee, Fla. - The Wayne State University softball squad (5-5 overall) scored once in the first inning and held on to defeat Southern Indiana (6-9 overall) 1-0 on Sunday morning.
In the bottom of the first, leadoff batter Lindsey Perry singled up the middle. Amanda Van't Wout reached on a fielder's choice, but Sarah Berry doubled with Van't Wout scoring on a throwing error by USI shortstop Ally McKinley.
The Screaming Eagles had a chance to tie in the top of the second on back-to-back one out singles, but WSU pitcher Molly Yetman (5-1) retired the next two hitters.
In the bottom of the second, WSU had three consecutive batters reach but Stephanie LeClair was tagged out at home trying to score from second on a single by Sarah Teller.
The Warriors turned a double play in the fourth as pinch-hitter Kate Vanosdol flied out to Van't Wout in right and her throw beat McKinley to the plate to end the inning.
In the sixth, Brittany DeWeese lined into a double play from Yetman to Perry.
Yetman finished with 10 strikeouts and three walks, while allowing two hits. Amy Harrison went the distance for USI striking out two and not walking a batter.
