Kissimmee, Fla. - The Wayne State University softball team (8-8) won its third consecutive contest with an 8-0 triumph over third-ranked SIU-Edwardsville (17-4), the defending national champions Thursday morning.
After the first six WSU batters were retired, junior left fielder Sarah Teller led off the third with a single up the middle. Jaci Banton reached on a fielder's choice and Lisa Seymour's sacrifice bunt advanced Banton. Lindsey Perry followed with an RBI single to right. She moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single to left by Amanda Van't Wout.
The Cougars had one hit in each of the first three but couldn't get a runner past second.
In the top of the fourth, Robyn Haig had a leadoff single to center and Stephanie LeClair followed with a single to right center. A ground out preceded a two-run double by Banton. After an out, Perry drove in Banton with a single to left giving the Warriors a 5-0 lead.
SIUE recorded two hits in the fourth, a double in the fifth and a single in the sixth but were unable to get a runner to third.
In the top of the seventh, Van't Wout had a one-out double to right center and scored on a double by Sarah Berry. Meredith Boxberger had WSU's third consecutive two-bagger plating Berry. After an out, LeClair recorded Wayne State's fourth double of the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, Amanda Pucel had a leadoff single, but Warrior hurler Molly Yetman retired the next two batters. Back-to-back singles loaded the bases, but Yetman recorded her 12th strikeout of the game for the final out.
Eight Warriors recorded hits with Perry, Van't Wout, Berry and LeClair each getting two.
