Findlay, Ohio - The Wayne State University softball team improved to 13-9 by claiming a 6-0 victory at Findlay (2-12 overall) in the conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
WSU senior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) struck out 13 and limited the Oilers to two hits. In recording her 19th career shutout at WSU, Yetman did not allow a walk to improve her record to 11-2. It was also the seventh time this year she struck out at least 10 batters in a game.
The Warrior offense got started in the second inning on a one-out bunt single by Stephanie LeClair. Sarah Teller then singled on an 0-1 pitch in the hole at shortstop. After a fielder's choice, Jaci Banton singled up the middle on a 1-1 pitch scoring Teller. Lindsey Perry then laced a 1-0 offering down the left field line plating Lisa Seymour.
Wayne State added an unearned run in the third as Sarah Berry's liner to short went off Alyssa Kushinski's glove with Berry hustling to second. Meredith Boxberger singled to right and scored on a fielding error by Kushinski.
Teller and Seymour had back-to-back singles leading off the sixth and Banton advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Perry's infield ground out scored WSU's fourth run.
Pinch-hitter Laura Maiorana led off the seventh with a 10-pitch at bat and was rewarded with a single through the left side. Laura Guzman reached on an error and following a strikeout and a fly out, Teller walked to load the bases. Seymour's single up the middle scored the final two runs of the game. Her first two-RBI game of the season came after fouling off four consecutive pitches.
Yetman retired 11 in a row from the end of the second inning until Brigitte Webb's one-out triple to left center in the sixth. She struck out the next batter and induced an infield pop up to end the frame.
Notes:
WSU committed its first error in five games.
The Warriors have won five in a row including three by shutout.
Yetman has 414 strikeouts for the Green and Gold and needs 13 more for fourth place on the all-time list.
Perry, Teller and Seymour each had two hits to pace the 11-hit WSU attack.
It was Perry's team-leading 10th multiple-hit game of the season and her two RBI also gave her a team-best four multiple-RBI contests this year.
