The Wayne State University softball squad (14-9 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) extended its winning streak to six games with an 8-0 whitewash in six innings of the University of Findlay (2-13 overall, 0-2) in the second game of Saturday's twinbill in Findlay.
The Warriors have recorded four shutouts during the win streak and have committed just one error. Sophomore pitcher Nicole Abel earned her second win of the campaign (and second by shutout) by limiting the Oilers to four singles in six innings. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
WSU broke the game open early with a five-run bottom of the first (in conference doubleheaders the home team switches for the second game).
Amanda Van't Wout started the hit parade with a one-out double to right center. Sarah Berry's single through the left side scored Van't Wout with Berry advancing to second on the throw. Meredith Boxberger's hit the next pitch through UF pitcher Jenna Binz's legs. Robyn Haig singled to left center scoring Berry for a 2-0 lead. Stephanie LeClair reached on a sacrifice bunt due to a throwing error which allowed Boxberger to score from second. After a pop out, Jaci Banton doubled over the center fielder's head scoring two more runners.
Neither team would score the next three innings, but in the bottom of the fifth after the first two batters were retired on line outs, Boxberger blooped a single into left center. Haig then clobbered the next pitch over the left field fence (the game was played on a men's field). The ball cracked the windshield of a car parked in the front row. Haig moved into ninth place on WSU's all-time home run list with her 12th career four-bagger.
In the sixth inning, Banton singled with one out and pinch-hitter Katie Golub's laser to left center that rolled to the fence scored Banton with the game-ending run.
Notes:
Wayne State continues its road trip with a GLIAC doubleheader at Ashland on Sunday. The Warriors have played all 23 games outside the state of Michigan.
Abel retired the first eight batters of the game and allowed only one runner past first -- Jessica Rolston had a one-out single in the fourth and went to third on a two-out single by Audrey Semanco.
Haig and Banton each had two hits as seven different Warriors had hits.
Haig and Boxberger each scored twice, while Haig had three RBI and Banton had two.
Wayne State went five-for-nine with runners on base, and four-for-nine with two outs.
