DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball team (17-9 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) won its ninth consecutive game with a 10-2 triumph over visiting Hillsdale College (4-15 overall, 2-3 GLIAC) in the first game of a conference doubleheader Wednesday at the WSU Softball Stadium.
The Warriors broke open a scoreless game with a four run fourth inning. The first two WSU batters were retired but Stephanie LeClair doubled to left center and advanced to third on a throwing error. Sarah Teller followed with an RBI double down the left field line, then scored on an RBI single to center by Lisa Seymour. Jaci Banton reached as her fly ball to left was dropped with Seymour scoring. Lindsey Perry's single to center plated Banton with the fourth two out run of the frame.
The Chargers pulled within two in the top of the fifth as Katie Botsis homered to left following a walk to Brecken Libbe.
Hillsdale loaded the bases in the sixth with two outs on two singles and a walk, but WSU pitcher Molly Yetman got Britt Sevey to hit a slow dribbler just in front of the plate which ended the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Teller walked with one out, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Seymour single. After Seymour stole second, Banton walked on four pitches. Perry reached on a dropped fly ball to load the bases. Amanda Van't Wout's fielder's choice scored Seymour with two more runners crossing home on a single up the middle by Sarah Berry. Meredith Boxberger had an RBI single to right and Robyn Haig ended the game with an RBI single up the middle.
Yetman allowed six hits in six innings with five strikeouts and four walks but earned her 14th win of the season. Aimee Genter (0-7) took the loss after surrendering four runs (two earned) in four innings. Jamie Vandenburgh pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed six runs (five earned).
