DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball squad (18-9 overall, 6-0 GLIAC) recorded its 10th straight victory with an 8-2 win over visiting Hillsdale College (4-16 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) in the second game of a league doubleheader Wednesday at the WSU Softball Stadium.
The Warriors scored the first five runs of the game to complete the sweep of the Chargers. Lindsey Perry laced the first pitch of the game for a double into left center. After a pop out and a wild pitch, Sarah Berry doubled on a 3-2 offering scoring Perry. Meredith Boxberger had an infield single with Berry scoring on a throwing error.
In the top of the third, Jaci Banton had a leadoff single and moved to second on a ground out. Amanda Van't Wout's single to left center put runners on the corners. Banton scored on a Berry single, while Robyn Haig's two-out double to right center made it 5-0.
Hillsdale scored once in the third and added another run in the fourth to make it 5-2.
In the top of the fifth, Van't Wout had a one-out double and following a walk to Berry, scored on a single by Boxberger.
WSU completed the scoring with two runs in the sixth. Katie Golub had a pinch-hit single with one out and Banton scored on Perry's fielder's choice and a throwing error by HC. Berry's double to right center on a 0-2 offering scored Perry with the final run.
Berry went 3-3 with three RBI as the Warriors pounded out 12 hits.
Lauren Warkentien started in the circle and allowed two earned runs in three innings. Nicole Abel (3-5) earned the win in relief by blanking Hillsdale on two hits over the final four innings. Kellie Hirst (3-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits in six innings.
Wayne State's homestand continues on Sunday with a GLIAC doubleheader against Lake Superior starting at 1 p.m.
