DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball squad (20-9 overall, 8-0 GLIAC) took over sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) with a come-from-behind 9-3 victory over Lake Superior (6-20 overall, 2-6 GLIAC) in the second game of a league doubleheader Sunday afternoon at WSU. Ferris State split at Saginaw Valley to fall to 7-1 in the conference.
The Lakers scored three runs in the bottom of the first on a triple by Rachel Hall, a double by Nichole Dunford and a home run by Jennie Elliott off WSU starter Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's).
The Warriors started their comeback with a single run in both the second and fourth to pull within 3-2.
In the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff double against Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City), Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont./Glenview Park. S.S.) went into the circle for WSU and struck out the next three batters.
Wayne State took its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth as Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont./Cardinal Carter) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy). Following a ground out, Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) drilled the first pitch over the left field fence.
In the sixth, WSU added two more runs. Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont./Forest Heights C.I.) had a leadoff double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Teller (Chesterfield Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse North). Following a ground out, Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) laced a 1-1 offering over the left field fence.
Wayne State completed the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh. Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont./Guelph Collegiate V.I.) had an infield single, then Berry clobbered a 1-1 offering over the new center field fence for her second home run of the contest.
Yetman earned the win in relief to improve to 16-2. She struck out eight in four innings and allowed just one hit and one walk. Warkentien held the Lakers scoreless for 2.2 innings with four strikeouts.
Nikki Christensen (2-10) was tagged with the loss after allowing six earned runs in 5.2 innings. Elliott allowed three runs in the final 1.1 innings.
Seymour led WSU with three hits, while Berry, Van't Wout and LeClair each had two hits. Berry and Seymour each had four RBI.
Wayne State is slated to play a non-conference doubleheader at Ferris State on Wednesday.
