DETROIT - The Wayne State University softball team (24-11 overall, 11-1 GLIAC) rallied from an early 1-0 deficit for a 2-1 victory over Saginaw Valley (21-11 overall, 6-4 GLIAC) in the nightcap of Thursday's GLIAC doubleheader.
The Cardinals scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first after the first two batters were retired. Stacy Kraatz reached on a fielding error, stole second and scored on a double by Nicole Laakso.
WSU starter Nicole Abel allowed two hits in the third but was aided by a caught stealing.
The Warriors had one hit in the first five innings off SVSU starter Kari Bowlby. Amanda Van't Wout led off the sixth with a single up the middle then beat a throw to second on Jaci Banton's sacrifice bunt. Lindsey Perry advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Following a ground out, Sarah Berry walked on the 10th pitch of the at bat. Pinch-hitter Katie Golub's hard smash up the middle on a 3-2 offering bounced into center field scoring both Van't Wout and Banton.
In the seventh off Cardinal reliever Jade Fulton, Lisa Seymour drilled a pitch into left field, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Van't Wout then had a 12 pitch at bat before lining out to right field.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kim Sills reached on a fielding error, but Abel retired the next three hitters on a pop out, fly out and ground out.
Abel earned her third win in her last four decisions by allowing just four hits and one unearned run. She struck out three and walked one.
Bowlby was tagged with the loss after allowing just three hits in six innings but two earned runs. She struck out three and walked one.
Both teams were 1-for-10 with runners on base in the contest.
Wayne State closes out the home portion of its 2008 regular-season schedule with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. The Warriors entertain Gannon on Saturday and Mercyhurst on Sunday. Action both days at the WSU Softball Stadium starts at 1 p.m.
