Big Rapids, Mich. - The 19th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (28-12 overall, 15-2 GLIAC) won for the 20th time in its last 23 outings with a 1-0 triumph at Ferris State (24-14 overall, 13-4 GLIAC) in the first game of Friday's GLIAC doubleheader.
The Warriors scored an unearned run in the top of the first and senior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) went the distance striking out nine while allowing just three Bulldog hits.
Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) led off the game with a double to left field. Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont.) laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Perry to third. Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) then ripped a pitch that the FSU shortstop was unable to handle allowing Perry to score the game's only run.
Perry led WSU with two hits, while Berry, Robyn Haig and Sarah Teller accounted for the remaining Warrior safeties.
Yetman retired 12 of Ferris' first 13 batters (only hit by pitch) until Amanda Jager doubled leading off the fifth. A pop up and a foul out preceded a walk and a fielder's choice to end the frame.
After FSU went 1-2-3 in the sixth, Bulldog Katie Kraai doubled to right field starting the seventh. Jager's single moved Kraai to third with no outs. Yetman then retired the final three batters on a pop up, strikeout and ground out to end the contest.
