Big Rapids, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball team (28-13 overall, 15-3 GLIAC) suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 setback in 10 innings at Ferris State (25-14 overall, 14-4 GLIAC) in the second game of Friday's league twinbill.

Both Wayne State starter Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont.) and Bulldog hurler Holly Bruntjens kept the opposing hitters at bay and the game remained scoreless through nine innings.

In the top of the 10th, Warrior senior Molly Yetman took to the circle as an FSU runner was placed on second base (international tie-breaker rule). After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, Bulldog Krystle Bailey walked for the second time in the contest and Katie Kraai singled up the middle scoring Rachel Wade.

In the bottom of the 10th Sarah Teller was placed on second, but was thrown out trying to go third on a ground out.

Abel allowed six hits while striking out four and walking three. The Bulldogs had a base runner in each of the first seven innings but were unable to get anyone past second base. Abel retired the final seven batters she faced including retiring the side in order in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Meanwhile, the Warrior offense was limited to four singles. Jaci Banton and Lindsey Perry had back-to-back two out singles in the third but WSU couldn't get a key two-out hit.

In the fourth inning, Lisa Seymour walked with two outs and Sarah Teller singled but the frame ended with a pop out.

Sarah Berry had a one-out single in the sixth but the next two batters were retired on ground outs.

Bruntjens retired the final 10 WSU hitters after walking Meredith Boxberger with one out in the seventh.

Wayne State concludes regular-season GLIAC play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Grand Valley.
