Midland, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball team (31-14 overall) advanced to the winner's bracket final of the 2008 GLIAC tournament with a 7-3 victory over Ashland University (28-16 overall) in Saturday morning's winner's bracket semifinal.
The Eagles scored two runs in the third after the first two batters struck out. Lyndsey Brandt slapped a pitch between short and third into left field. Eric Miller walked and both runners advanced a base on a passed ball. Jennifer Alderson's infield single scored Brandt. Kristen McGaughey's double down the left field line plated Miller.
AU starter Logan Hursey (11-8) retired the first nine Warrior batters before Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) led off the fourth with a single to center field. Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases after Saray Berry (Acton, Ont.) had reached on an error. The next two WSU hitters were retired leaving the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the fifth, Sarah Teller (Chesterfield, Mich.) had a leadoff infield single. Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont.) reached on an error and Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont.) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Perry then laced a single to right center tying the score at two. Stephanie LeClair's (Kitchener, Ont.) bunt single moved Perry to second and Berry ripped a double down the left field line scoring Perry with the tie-breaking run. Haig's single to left center plated LeClair. After a pop up, Lisa Seymour's (Davison, Mich.) single to center scored Berry.
The Warriors added two more runs in the sixth as Banton laced a one-out double to right center and Perry smacked her second home run of the campaign.
WSU senior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) allowed just four hits and three runs (two earned) with five strikeouts to earn her 24th win of the season.
Wayne State will play Saginaw Valley at approximately 3:30 p.m. this afternoon in the winner's bracket final.
