Midland, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball team (33-16) lost 3-2 to Saginaw Valley (34-15) in the 2008 GLIAC Tournament championship game Sunday afternoon at Emerson Park in Midland.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead on the third pitch of the game as Angela Kaiser homered to right field off WSU starter Nicole Abel.
SVSU added two runs on bases loaded walks in the third.
WSU cut into the Cardinal lead in the fourth as Sarah Berry had a one-out infield single. Robyn Haig followed with a single to right with Berry moving to third on Lisa Seymour's fielder's choice. Sarah Teller's single through the left side plated Berry.
The Warriors loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth but Cardinal reliever Jade Fulton induced an inning-ending fielder's choice.
Wayne State made it a one-run contest as Seymour led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to left on a 1-2 pitch.
Abel (4-8) allowed just two hits in 2.2 innings but walked four and struck out one. Lauren Warkentien held SVSU scoreless in 3.2 innings on four hits. Molly Yetman recorded the final two outs.
Kari Bowlby (8-6) earned the win limiting WSU to five hits and one run in 4.2 innings. Fulton allowed one run on two hits in 2.1 innings.
Wayne State will learn its seed for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional later today. Competition begins on Wednesday at SIU-Edwardsville.
