ASHLAND, Ohio - In a three-team meet at the University of Ashland, the Wayne State swimming and diving team defeated the host Eagles, 159-137, but fell to Clarion University, 169-127, on Saturday afternoon.
Clarion also triumphed over Ashland, 196-101.
The Warriors were led by sophomore Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison), who won three individual events.
St. Andrew took first place in the 1000 free (10:27.44), followed by Melissa Duff (Howell, Mich./Brighton) in second (10:50.27).
Wayne State had the top three finishers in both the 200 and 500 freestyle swims. In the 200 free, St. Andrew led the pack (1:55.59) with Abbey Green (Dearborn, Mich.) in second (1:58.15) and Catherine Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) in third (1:58.86).
St. Andrew also won the 500 free (5:08.98) while Catherine Leix took second (5:16.18) and Duff third (5:18.83).
Other strong swims came from Laura Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern), who won the 200 butterfly (2:12.88), and Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.), who finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.69) and third in the 200 back (2:13.92)
Senior Erika Barczak (Williamston, Mich.) won the one-meter diving competition (225.80) and was the runner-up on the three-meter board (226.55).
Both the 200 freestyle (1:42.65) and 200 medley (1:52.61) relay combinations finished in third place for the Warriors.
The Wayne State divers will participate in the Youngstown (Ohio) Diving Invitational on Feb. 9 before the entire WSU squad heads for the GLIAC Championships (Feb. 13-16) hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
