INDIANAPOLIS - The Wayne State swimming and diving team is off to a good start in its quest to defend its GLIAC Championship, as the Warriors have a 58-point lead through the first day of the 2008 conference meet, hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

WSU totaled 114 points Wednesday evening, followed by Grand Valley State with 56 points. The host Greyhounds and Ashland are tied for third with 49 points.

In the first event of the meet, the first-place 200 medley relay combination of Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.), Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood), Agata Zalewska (Swietochlowice, Poland), and Julie Danaher (Allen Park, Mich.) set a school record and eclipsed the NCAA "A" qualifying standard with a time of 1:47.52.

Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) won the 1650 freestyle (17:19.83) while Melissa Duff (Howell, Mich./Brighton) placed fourth (17:49.39). In addition, four Warriors placed seventh through 10th - Maggie Young (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's), Natalia Buso (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Laicee Laforet (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's), and Whitney Baker (Trenton, Mich.).

The 2008 GLIAC Championships will continue Thursday with the preliminary round at 10:30 a.m. followed by the finals at 6:00 p.m. Fans can follow the action live at UIndy's Web site.
