Women's Swimming Leads Pack After Friday's Events At GLIACs

INDIANAPOLIS - The Wayne State women's swimming team continues to lead the 2008 GLIAC Championship through Friday, as it holds a 69-point lead over Grand Valley State.

The Warriors (527) and Lakers (458) are ahead of the host Greyhounds (327), Ashland (271), and Lewis (242). Gannon (214.5), Hillsdale (162.5), Findlay (132), and Northern Michigan (115) round out the field of nine.

Friday was highlighted by Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) achieving an NCAA "A" qualifier in the 400 individual medley (4:32.21) , and Jodi Scott (Windsor, Ont./Riverside S.S.) setting a school record and earning a "B" cut in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.37).

In the first event of the evening, Agata Zalewska (Swietochlowice, Poland) was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly, setting a schol record and improving upon a previous national "B" cut with a time of 57.78, and Laura Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) finished seventh (59.90).

Hogle was one of three Warriors in the A final of the 400 individual medley, as Laura Leix placed seventh (4:45.71) and Whitney Baker (Trenton, Mich.) came in eighth (4:53.28).

Catherine Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) improved her national qualfiying time with a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:55.44). Abbey Green (Dearborn, Mich.) came in 11th in the B final (1:58.60).

While Scott achieved her "B" cut and school record in the preliminary 100 breaststroke, her final time of 1:06.97 was good for second place. Hogle was just .17 seconds behind in third (1:07.14), and Haintso Rakouth (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) and Maria Johnston (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) took ninth (1:08.83) and 10th (1:09.62), respectively, in the B final.

After besting her previous national cut in the preliminary 100 backstroke (59.56), Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.) finished second in the final swim (1:00.43).

Wrapping up the night for the women was the 800 freestyle relay of Rakouth, Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison), Catherine Leix, and Hogle, which came in second (7:49.59).

Saturday marks the final day of the 2008 GLIAC Championship, with prelims starting at 10:30 and the finals beginning at 6:00 p.m.
