Xavier vs. Saint Joseph's Postgame Notes

13/14 Xavier (20-4, 8-1 Atlantic 10) finished the game with an 8-0 run over the final 2:15 to defeat Saint Joseph's (15-7, 6-3), 76-72. Stanley Burrell scored 16 points to lead four Musketeers in double figures. Josh Duncan added 13 points, Drew Lavender 12 points, and B.J. Raymond 11 points. Jason Love grabbed 8 rebounds, while Lavender, Duncan, and Raymond each had 4 assists. Rob Ferguson led Saint Joseph's with 18 points, followed by Pat Calathes with 16 points and Tasheed Carr with 10 points. Calathes had 7 rebounds and 5 assists while Carr chipped in 5 assists.

 

Four Musketeers (Burrell, Duncan, Lavender, and Raymond) scored in double figures today. XU is 17-0 when four or more players score in double figures.

 

With today's win, XU clinched its third straight 20-win season and its 11th in the last 12 seasons. The victory also marked the 21st time in the last 26 years that XU has won at least 20 games.

 

Xavier improved its record to 10-0 over the last two Februarys (3-0 this season, 7-0 last season).

 

Xavier is now 103-16 (.866) all-time and 51-10 (.836) against A-10 competition at Cintas Center.

 

Josh Duncan scored 13 points today to become the 45th member of XU's 1,000 Point Club. His 1,000th point came on an inside basket at 11:32 of the second half. He now has 1,007 career points. He joins Stanley Burrell (1,499), Drew Lavender (1,332 total , 673 at XU, 659 at Oklahoma), and C.J. Anderson (1,015 total, 263 at XU, 752 at Manhattan) as 1,000-point career scorers on the XU roster.

 

B.J. Raymond had a career-high 4 assists. His previous high was 3 assists three times.

 

SJU's Tasheed Carr had a career-high 7 steals. His previous high was 6 steals at Boston University (11-17-07).

 

Xavier honored its 1958 NIT Championship team today by wearing throwback uniforms.

 

Scoring Runs

 

Trailing 17-13 at 10:15, XU went on a 23-6 run to take a 36-23 lead at 3:28. B.J. Raymond scored 6 points and Dante Jackson and Josh Duncan each added 5 points during the stretch.

 

Trailing 41-32 at the intermission, SJU opened the second half with a 21-5 run to take 53-46 lead at 12:59. Pat Calathes and Rob Ferguson each scored 7 points to lead the attack.

 

Trailing 60-53 at 8:50, XU went on a 12-2 run to take a 65-62 lead at 6:15. Josh Duncan and Stanley Burrell each had 3-pointers.

 

Trailing 72-68 at 2:15, XU finished the game on an 8-0 run to win 76-72. B.J. Raymond and Josh Duncan each had 3 points.

 

Up Next: The Musketeers will travel to Charlotte to face the 49ers on Wednesday, February 13, at 7:30 p.m. XU leads the all-time series 4-0. Last year the Musketeers hit a school-record 16 3-pointers en route to a 91-57 victory at Cintas Center. Drew Lavender led the Musketeers with 31 points, while Stanley Burrell added 25, and B.J. Raymond 12. XU held Charlotte to just 32.9 percent shooting from the field and 6.9 percent from behind the 3-point arc. XU won its only visit to Charlotte, 78-65, January 14, 2006.
