Sean Miller Makes Some Changes On His Staff
July 23, 2008 CINCINNATI - Xavier University head basketball coach Sean Miller announced the addition of Travis Steele, who will serve as the program's Director of Basketball Operations, and Steve Struble, who will be the Graduate Program Assistant.
After two years at Indiana University, Travis Steele comes to XU to replace Bill Comar, who was recently hired as an assistant coach at Loyola University Chicago. After serving as the video coordinator for a season and a half while at Indiana, Steele was promoted to the position of assistant coach in February, 2008. In that role, he participated in recruiting both on and off-campus and coached daily practices, focusing on skills development of post players. He was also responsible for tracking the academic progress of the student-athletes.
Steele, 24, joined the Hoosiers in August 2006, taking on the duties of the video coordinator. He facilitated advanced scouting of opponents, was responsible for evaluating team practices and organized prospect recruiting on a national level to begin his stint with Indiana.
Prior to his time with the Hoosiers, he served as an assistant men's basketball coach at Wabash Valley College. Joining the Warriors in October, 2005, Steele also functioned as the programs Recruiting Coordinator and developed a skill instruction program.
Steele spent a year with the Ohio State University basketball program, serving as a graduate manager. His responsibilities included assisting with the skill instruction program and scouting of opposing teams, and he also helped organize recruiting efforts.
From 2001-06, Steele served as a coach for the Spiece/Indiana Adidas Elite AAU Basketball program. Recruiting high school players, he also coordinated practice and communicated plans to staff while organizing all travel and scheduling. Steele also served as assistant varsity basketball coach at Ben Davis High School while attending Butler University from 2001-2004.
Steele graduated cum laude from Butler in May 2004, earning a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. Steve Struble comes to Xavier as a Graduate Program Assistant after spending the last two as an assistant men's basketball coach at St. Mary's College of Maryland. In his first season, Struble helped St. Mary's record its first winning record since 2000-01 and last season he helped the team win a conference championship, earn the school's first-ever NCAA berth and reach the NCAA Division III "Sweet 16." Struble replaces Ryan Reynolds, who recently was hired as assistant coordinator of basketball operations at Wake Forest. Struble's duties will include assisting in scouting and film exchange. He serves as the director of the Chris Harney Basketball School Camps in addition to the numerous other summer camps that he works such as the Army Summer Basketball Camps, the Big Orange Basketball Camp at Syracuse University, the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camps, the Five-Star Basketball Camp, the Morgan Wooten and Penn State University Basketball Camps. Miller also announced that Director of Basketball Administration Mario Mercurio will be taking over academic coordination duties for the student-athletes. Mercurio will retain his responsibilities with budget, travel and non-conference scheduling.
