March 9, 2008
CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's tennis team downed Atlantic 10 rival St. Bonaventure, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club. The match was stopped early as Xavier had already collected enough points to secure the win. The Musketeers improve to 8-6 overall, 3-1 in A-10 play, after winning their sixth consecutive match. The Bonnies fall to 3-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference action. "The victory was good for us, we played well," commented head coach Eric Toth. "St. Bonaventure is a team that will be a force to be reckoned with in the A-10 Tournament. We will need an equal or better performance tomorrow to get past Duquesne." Xavier won two of the three doubles contests to start the match winning the first point as the No. 3 doubles matchup did not finish. Junior Doug Matthews notched a three-set win over SBU's Victor Lecina at the No. 1 singles position, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, while sophomore Chris Herrlinger defeated Jonathan Luce, 7-6(5), 6-3, at the two-spot. In the No. 3 slot, junior Ra'ees Ismail downed Chris Post, 6-4, 7-5, and senior Brian Schubert put away Enric Larregola, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5.
