Women's Golf led by Mary Beth McKenna at Samford Intercollegiate

ONEONTA, Ala. - The Xavier women's golf team opened the first round with some trouble, but finished with improvement at the Samford University Intercollegiate. Sophomore Mary Beth McKenna led the Musketeers to a 14th place finish at the 5,808 yard, par-72 Limestone Springs G.C. Tulsa University captured the team title, shooting 20-over par for the tournament. Emily deGroot of Tenn.-Chattanooga was the individual medal winner, finishing at five-under par, including a final-round 68. McKenna was consistent throughout the tournament, shooting rounds of 80, 80, and 79 to finish in a tie for 47th place at 23-over par (239). Freshman Audrey Fellmeth was not far behind, firing rounds of 82, 78, and 80 to earn a tie a for 49th place just a stroke behind McKenna. Senior Diana Torry concluded her tournament performance with an 82 to finish in 61st place with a 246 (+30). Freshman Rachel Levi was a shot behind her after a final-round 80 to give her a 247 (+31) and a tie for 62nd place. Junior Lindsay Cornell closed day one with a second-round 80, but could not build on the momentum, finishing in a tie for 67th at 251 (+35). Playing as an individual, sophomore Lindsay Steiner finishing in a tie for 80th place at 276 (+60). The women's golf team will continue their spring break road trip this Friday, March 21 with a three-day stop in Tega Cay, S.C. for the Shamrock Intercollegiate.
