April 18, 2008

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After the first round of the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Championship, the Xavier women's golf team sits in fifth place (+23), poised to strike at fourth-place James Madison (+21) and third-place William & Mary (+17).

Mary Beth McKenna fired a two-over par 74 to lead the opening day for the Musketeers in a tie for sixth place.  Audrey Fellmeth shot a five-over 77 (T-16), followed closely by Rachel Levi at 78 (T-23).  Diana Torry concluded the day in a tie for 33rd at ten-over par while Lindsay Steiner posted an 86, putting her in a tie for 42nd going into Saturday.

Following the first round, the 2008 CAA women's golf awards were announced.  Mary Beth McKenna was named to the All-CAA Conference First Team.  The honor is McKenna's for the second straight year.  Her 77.48 scoring average this season, coupled with her low round of 73 (+1) at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate on September 22, helped earn the distinction.  McKenna has recorded three top-ten finishes in the 2007-08 season.

The tournament continues Saturday morning at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.  Live scoring is available on golfstat.com.
